Summary of Functions: Truck Mechanics must run diagnostic tests to find sources of engine problems and remove and repair faulty parts. They must also have thorough knowledge of machines and tools for making repairs and regular maintenance on specific trucks. This position requires a sound ability to troubleshoot, read and comprehend work-related documents, provide customer service, and use good judgment. This is an exempt-level position. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: May or may not include: Diagnose truck problems, including diesel and tractor trailer issues Inspect, repair, and adjust air-conditioning and air systems Repair body/accessory issues Diagnose fault codes and repairs electrical components Inspects and repair carburetors/injectors and transmissions Repair and replace parts Mount and dismount wheels Welding Perform multiple house keeping tasks Keep accurate records of all repairs to trucks to be scanned to appropriate manager and maintained in truck files Test drive repaired trucks Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis Organizational Relationships: This position reports to and is in constant communication with the Dispatch Manager and is also required to communicate with the branch’s Service Manager. On occasion it will be necessary to contact the Branch Operations Manager. Fairly often, there will be contact with co-workers of multiple departments. Qualifications: Must be able to utilize engine testing equipment and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions. Ability to examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices. Skilled technician with a background in servicing diesel truck preferred. The ability to perform general maintenance on trucks with at least 5 years of experience. Must be able to inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose issues. Ability to perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery. Must be able to read, write, and speak English. Needs to possess own tools. Must be able to follow directions. Must be able to work basic computer functions. Must have a large assortment of hand and power tools. Must have steel toe work boots. Must be able to properly use the parts manuals to look up and order correct replacement parts. Must be able to work shop equipment such as cranes, port-o-powers, chain hoists, etc. Applicant must have a valid Class A driver’s license Must be able to provide Motor Vehicle Record at time of job offer (current within 15 days) Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently on their feet and required to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl for extended periods of time. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, talk, write and hear. At times, may be required to climb a ladder. The employee must frequently lift, push, pull, and/or move weights varying between 60 - 90 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts or in various weather conditions. In this work environment, the employee may be asked to be outside in the elements anywhere from 5% to 95% of shift. The employee is required to wear protective gear when exposed to fumes, grease, oils, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Mechanics typically work in repair shops or in outside work areas depending on the size of the facility. The work shops are well lighted and ventilated. An employee of this position may be exposed to poor weather conditions, including extreme heat. They may also work in cramped or awkward positions to reach a machine's engine.
